Any Child Can Get Head Lice

December 29, 2021

Don’t feel embarrassed if your child gets head lice. The tiny insects, each adult about the size of a sesame seed, aren’t an indication of poor hygiene or a low socioeconomic class. These six-legged critters that consume human blood and latch onto scalps and necks don’t discriminate.

At the office of Prime Immediate and Primary Care, our skilled pediatricians are experts at diagnosing children’s health issues as well as providing the treatment needed to maintain their excellent health. Our doctors will take as much time as you need to address your and your child’s every concern and explain your options in care.

Lice typically take up residence on children in daycare, preschool and grades 1 through 6. Kids in those age groups often come into direct contact with each other in the classroom and on the playground. They roughhouse with each other and perhaps exchange hats and hair accessories.

The good news is that lice don’t carry diseases. The bad news is that they can spread to a household’s other members because the critters can continue to live, albeit for only a short period, on clothing and other personal objects.

You can spot lice and their nits (the eggs or young versions) with the naked eye, though they’re most visible around the ears and back of the head. These white, dark grey or brown little devils are oval or round flecks that cling to hairs near the scalp. They’re so tightly stuck with a glue-like substance that you can’t slide them off. The best way to spot an influx is to comb through hair while it’s wet.

Intense itching is the most common sign of an infestation. The resulting scratching can beget small red bumps on the shoulders, scalp and neck, as well as raw patches on the scalp. Another frequent symptom is a tickling feeling in your hair. If you believe your child has head lice, have your pediatrician confirm it.

Head lice don’t disappear on their own. Remedies include over-the-counter treatments (though not best for very young children). If two applications don’t work, your pediatrician can provide an alternative medication. You can also use fine-toothed combs or professional head lice removal services.

Whatever your child’s medical needs, count on Prime Immediate and Primary Care.
